The art of Pysanky and how I came to do it
Ukrainian artwork on eggshells has been practiced for years. For good information on the history and meaning behind the tradition, go to http://www.ukrainiangiftshop.com/pages/art.htm.
Years ago, when I was in High School, my mother took a class in how to create Pysanky, or Ukrainian Eggs. She came home and showed me, and we enjoyed working on them together. Beyond enjoying this new craft, we had no specific connection to Pysanky. Something about the whole process really stuck with us, though, and we continued to create them. Some time later, a family member did some research on our family tree and discovered more about the small Russian side of our family. We were thrilled to find out that what we had always called our Russian relatives were actually Ukrainian! My mother has passed away, but I continue to carry on a tradition that managed to jump a few generations and surface again in our family. I sincerely hope you enjoy them :).
